Inquiry Lesson Reflection

Students are permitted to improve - to a limited extent - the peer assessment score received on each of the inquiry-oriented lessons taught in PHY 312. The improvement in score on a given lesson is limited to one half the maximum possible gain for that lesson. That is, if a student scores only 70% of the possible points on an inquiry-oriented lesson, the maximum possible replacement score will be 85% [=70%+0.5*( 100% - 70%)]. The maximum gain will occur only if in the judgment of the instructor all the following requirements are met to perfection:

  1. The student reviews the videotape of the lesson and then writes a honest and concise reflection dealing with each of the elements in the scoring rubric for which less than a perfect score was obtained.
  2. The student records all hand-written comments on the scoring rubric indicating need for improvement, and responds to them one by one indicating how the lesson would change if taught again. (Similar comments may be clustered and treated as a group.)
  3. The student revises and/or details the lesson plan to align with the changes enunciated in steps 1 and 2 above. (Sorry, no replacement score for the instructor's assessment of the original lesson plan.)
  4. The reflection is completed and turned in along with peer scoring rubrics within two weeks of the date when the lesson was taught.

The instructor reserves the right to adjust scores as seen fit based on his subjective assessment of the quality of the reflections.
