A7: Adobe Acrobat

A. INTRODUCTION

Today with the two majors platforms in desktop computing -- Macintosh and PC -- there is a frequent need to transfer documents from one platform to another, that is -- create cross-platform documents. Also, there is a need to be able to create documents on one platform that will look exactly the same on another. This is especially important in the day and age of online documents viewable with leading Web browsers, or available over the Internet. Adobe's Acrobat program can create such files. Acrobat Reader, which is a free viewing companion available over the WWW, may be used by anyone to read "PDF" (portable document file) files that have been composed with any application, and translated into a pdf file using Acrobat. In this exercise you will create and e-mail (as an attachment) a PDF document that you created using any application, then converted into PFD format using Acrobat.

B. PROCEDURE

  1. Obtain the Adobe Acrobat 3.0 CD-ROM from your course instructor IF the program is not already installed on one of the PHY 302 computers in MLT 203. (You will need to ask your instructor.)
  2. Load the application if necessary, following the instructions provided with the CD-ROM.
  3. Open your computer's Chooser and then select Acrobat PDFWriter, a virtual printer that composes pdf files. Close the Chooser.
  4. Open an application such as a Word document file that you want to convert to PDF format. Select print. When you print to the PDFWriter virtual printer, you are in actuality creating a PDF file.
  5. The renamed file "Name" should appear as "Name.pdf" on the desktop or other designated folder.
  6. Send this PFD file as an attachment to your course instructor via e-mail.
