E2: Pasco Scientific's DataStudio
A. INTRODUCTION
In 1999 Pasco Scientific introduced a modified and more capable
version of ScienceWorkshop. This newer version, DataStudio,
has several capabilities sorely lacking in ScienceWorkshop.
New Features in DataStudio (compared to ScienceWorkshop)
include:
- Workbook display
- Enhanced curve fit options
- Editable data
- Online and context-sensitive help
- Data Modeling
- Direct manipulation of objects
- Easy upgrading
- Easy access to built-in tools
- New tool and function names
In this activity you will set up and perform one experiment
using DataStudio. Set up must be "from scratch."
You may not use imported data to conduct this activity. No lab
report is due, but you must generate enough printed material to
demonstrate clearly that you have performed all activities outlined
in the section below.
B. PROCEDURE
- Obtain a copy of the e-measure Exploratory Workshop Guide from the
course instructor.
- Obtain a copy of the DataStudio software from the course instructor,
or obtain a demonstration copy by accessing the PASCO
web site.
- Load the software on a computer in MLT 307-B to which a PASCO interface
is attached. Be certain to restart the computer after the software is loaded.
- Set up a sensor and gather time-based data that can be readily used as part
of your required demonstration interview (e.g. motion of a rotary sensor,
temperature of a cooling object).
- Learn the new features of DataStudio that make it a valuable upgrade
to ScienceWorskhop. Go to the following menu for an electronic update:

Workshop
- Be certain that you can perform the following activities during a demonstration
interview (see page viii of guide for quick reference sheet):
- Create a workbook in the Data Summary column (see page 39 of the e-measure
Exploratory Workshop Guide).
- Scale a meter to entirely fill the screen.
- Re-scale the data so it fills the Graph display window.
- Pinpoint the x- and y-coordinate values on the Graph display.
- "Zoom In" or "Zoom Out"
- Magnify a selected portion of the plotted data.
- Perform a calculation.
- Add a text note to the Graph.
- Select functions from the Statistics menu.
- Modify data.
- Adjust Graph settings.
C. EVALUATION
Evaluation will consist of a demonstration interview with the
course instructor. Be prepared to state and demonstrate the benefits
of using DataStudio over ScienceWorkshop.
