A5: Desktop Publishing

A. INTRODUCTION

Desktop publishing (DTP) integrates word processing, computer graphics, and high-resolution printing to produce print media that heretofore were only within the realm of commercial printers to produce. DTP programs put high quality print production in the hands of anyone with a computer, appropriate software, and a good printer. A number of DTP programs are available such as PageMaker, Illustrator, and such. Nonetheless, you need not purchase these sophisticated and expensive programs if your DPT needs are relatively simple. Microsoft Word has many of the capabilities of such programs.

In this activity you will use some of the advanced features of Microsoft Word to produce a DPT quality publication that must satisfy a number of criteria. These criteria may be found in the procedure section below.

B. PROCEDURE

1. Access a copy of Microsoft Word. This program may be found on any of the Physics Department's computers. Familiarize yourself with the DTP capabilities of the program. You should know how to, and be able to do the following tasks before beginning the next portion of this project:

2. If you do have any problems with the above, check out Microsoft Word Help, under the Help menu. If you are still uncertain about any of these features, please check with the course instructor.

3. Create a one-page, tri-fold brochure (three text columns using a landscape view) that is about any topic your hear desires. Text may be non-sensical if you wish (just cut an past some text). Your brochure must contain one picture that is the width of one column, but straddling two columns (e.g., using text wrap); the height is arbitrary. Your three columns must be headed by an over arching piece of word art. Use a variety of fonts, and font styles in the brochure. Set of some text, and outline with a border. Shade the textbox with some light shade of gray.

C. EVALUATION

The project brochure will be assessed on the basis of the degree to which each of the above criteria in section 3 above are included and properly executed.
