Extreme Travel Adventure Challenge

The Problem

You and your team have been invited to try out for a position on a television game show called Extreme Travel Adventure Challenge. In order to qualify for participation, you and your team must prepare and present in both written and oral forms the best possible travel plan for one of this nation’s most challenging cross-country travel locations. Your goal is to describe how you will most quickly and safely travel the distance between two isolated locations using only the materials your team can carry.

  • You will only be permitted to walk; you may not use vehicles of any sort.
  • You may not follow roads and may not used established bridges.
  • You may not depend on or use the help of anyone outside your team for assistance.
  • You may use naturally-occurring items found along the way such as plant materials.
  • You may not use manmade materials other than what you can carry with you.

If you violate any of these conditions, your team will be disqualified.

You will be part of a team consisting of 3 to 4 classmates; there will be several other teams – each with their own extreme travel adventure challenge mission. If your team can successfully prepare and present the best travel plan, you and your team will be put on location to complete your planned extreme travel adventure.

If you should be chosen to conduct your Extreme Travel Adventure Challenge, you and your teammates will be videotaped along the way by the TV program’s production unit. The TV crew will fly in and out on a daily basis with the use of helicopters to record your adventure. The TV crew will not provide you or your teammates with any sort of assistance or materials. In fact, the crew is prohibited from communicating with you in any way. The only exception to the rule will be in the event of a serious medical emergency. If one of your team members has to be transported off location for any reason, your mission will end and your team will be disqualified.
